Meet the Woman Who Refuses to Let Kids Go Hungry

Every summer in Athens, Texas, Willa Johnson does something most people never see. While school cafeterias close and lunch programs pause, she opens her kitchen earlier than most people wake up. Five days a week, she drives more than 100 miles from Fort Worth to East Texas, loads up her food truck, and serves hot, homemade meals to children who would otherwise go without. Through her one-woman mission called Feeding Kids Right, Willa provides restaurant-quality comfort food to kids in low-income neighborhoods throughout the summer months. What began as a promise she made to herself as a child has become a lifeline for hundreds of families who rely on school meals during the year. When COVID-19 shut schools down early, the need only grew. Donations slowed. The demand did not. This Texas Country Reporter story follows Willa through long days, empty food pans, and the emotional weight of knowing there are still kids waiting when the food runs out. For Willa Johnson, this work is not about recognition or charity. It is about showing up, cooking with care, and making sure no child feels forgotten when school is out.
