This is the infamous "f***k Robert Palmer, f**k Rock and Roll" episode where the Cure were told they had to cut their set short, obviously not to the amusement of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Lol Tolhurst. Robert Smith series (1 of 7) Robert Smith co-founded post-punk pioneering powerhouse The Cure in 1978; he’s the only consistent member, primary songwriter, lead guitarist and vocalist. This song is from their second album, 1980’s “Seventeen Seconds.” This particular version is famous; right before they started Smith was told they had to end their set early to make way for pop rock crooner Robert Palmer. He was not happy at this news, so they greatly extended the song; you can see the band members conferring about how to make it even longer. Robert Smith series (2 of 7) The Cure was the support band for Siouxsie and the Banshees on their 2nd album “Join Hands” promo tour in 1979, and when their first regular guitarist John McKay had a nervous breakdown mid-tour, Smith became lead guitarist for both bands on that tour before going back to The Cure full time.
