The game was released on March 24, 2015. On November 24 of that same year, the game's only expansion, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters, was released. The game begins in the fictional city of Yharnam, a Victorian-Gothic city ravaged by a plague epidemic. The player takes control of a wanderer who arrived in the city to cure his illness, but became a so-called "hunter" due to a local blood transfusion ritual. The game's plot, like previous FromSoftware games, is not directly explained, so one of the player's primary goals remains exploring the game's locations and destroying the "prey"—the bosses.
