Safety A well-built and properly designed modern catamaran is very difficult to sink. No matter how you look at it, two hulls are definitely safer than one in the event of a hole. There are also many stories of lost keels. Capsize!!! Today, the tendency of catamarans to capsize is a myth. Modern designs are created using computer modeling for virtually any sea state. Cruisers have the maximum possible safe sail area, while charter options have even less. There's also a theory that on some models, the mast breaks before the critical heel angle is exceeded. In particular, I found this information online. The Australian manufacturer Seawind hasn't had a single capsize or sinking of its catamarans in 20 years. Apparently, the chances of a standard ballast keel breaking off are much higher than those of a modern multihull. And, perhaps, the most objective approach to safety is insurance. If catamarans were more dangerous than classic boats, insurance policies would differ in cost, but that's not the case. And if anyone has both statistics and analytics, it's insurers who are excellent at calculating costs. For example, a smoker's health insurance policy is 40 percent more expensive than a non-smoker's. Besides, a level deck during an ocean or sea voyage is always safer than a listing one, both for rigging and for relaxation. In particular, I've climbed a mast in the ocean and repaired a lazy jack while standing on the hardtop—reefing—and by and large, I had no problems with these tasks. Try doing the same on a monoyacht, and you'll see the difference. Now, a separate tangle of words about a very well-known myth: Catamarans don't sail well upwind. This refers to a design feature. This may be true. But... my experience casts doubt on this thesis. 6. The romance and aesthetics of a classic yacht are UNDISPUTED!!! But let's sum it up. After two and a half years of living on a catmaran, my opinion is this: if you're spending $100,000 or more on a yacht, you'll get much more benefit from investing in a catamaran than a monohull. *** P.S.
