The birthday song had just ended. My granddaughter closed her eyes. She smiled as everyone cheered. Then, without warning, my daughter's father-in-law grabbed a handful of cake. He shoved it into her face. Frosting covered her cheeks. Her tiny smile disappeared. The room erupted with nervous laughter. She stood perfectly still. Then she started to cry. I reached for a napkin and gently wiped the frosting from her face while everyone else acted as though it had all been harmless fun. I didn’t question it at first.
