Carnival Parade 1965 in Wattens – A Look Back – Otto Springer (A film by Otto Springer 1965; Editing, Sound & Text: Reinhard Rovara ©2024) The 1965 carnival parade in Wattens was an unforgettable event that went down in the town's history books. Organized by the Wattens Traditional Customs Group, the town transformed for a day into a joyful stage brimming with creativity, tradition, and community spirit. It was a time when the world seemed right for the people, before the devastating flood of June of that year left deep scars, a "once-in-a-century event." Against the backdrop of the Daniel Swarovski Monument, decorated floats and various traditional groups paraded past the honored guests. Accompanied by boisterous revelry, music, and joyful cheers, the day became a spectacle that attracted hundreds of visitors. The diversity and originality of the participating groups and floats demonstrated the creativity and dedication of the region. Particularly impressive were: • Laurel and Hardy, the legendary film characters, who had the crowd laughing with their humor. • The Bremen Town Musicians: A classic presented as a lovingly designed float. • Traditional groups from the region, including the colorful Spiegeltuxer, shaggy Zottler, fearsome witches, bears, Zaggeler, and Melcher, presented traditional figures and dances. • A meticulously recreated dairy and cheese factory brought the daily life and culture of agriculture to life. • Humorous touches, such as a "baby instruction manual" on one of the floats, brought smiles to the faces of the spectators. • The 1876 Cycling Association proudly presented itself, as did an imaginatively decorated witch's float. • A satirical skit depicting oil sheikhs in the National Council sparked lively discussions. • The five tandem skiers from the WSV (Wattens Ski Club) were particularly original, demonstrating their skill in a daring manner. • Bell ringers brought rhythmic sounds and a vibrant display of local customs. • A stray horse provided a surprise, delighting the spectators with its spontaneity. • The brass bands, with their marches and lively tunes, provided the musical backdrop and fueled the festive atmosphere. A Celebration for the Community The parade was more than just a spectacle – it was a social event that strengthened the community and offered visitors a break from everyday life. The streets of Wattens were filled with laughter, music, and the joy of a time of shared tradition.
