"Los orangutanes están al borde de la extinción" | Entrevista a Biruté Galdikas, primatóloga
Galdikas is, together with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, the most prominent scientist in research and the fight to protect primates; her specialty is the reinsertion of small orphan orangutans, with whom she has been working for more than 40 years. Born in 1946 in Germany and raised in Canada, she attended a lecture by anthropologist Louis Leakey at the University of California, which dealt with the dangers faced by great apes and the interest in their study for evolutionary theory. Leakey had already been a mentor and promoter of Jane Goodall's research projects with the chimpanzees in Gombe and Dian Fossey's with the gorillas in Virunga, so Biruté Galdikas convinced Louis to do the same with her and the orangutans. After obtaining funding from National Geographic, Biruté Galdikas settled in Borneo, where she founded the Louis Leakey Research Center and began to study orangutans, until she became the world's leading expert on these primates. On the occasion of the VII Congress of Social Communication of Science in October 2019, Dr. Galdikas gave an inaugural lecture, occasion in which we took the opportunity to conduct this interview. The VII Congress of Social Communication of Science was organized by the Scientific Culture Unit of the University of Burgos and the Spanish Association for Science Communication, with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
