Born in 1109, he led the independence of the County of Portucalense from the Kingdom of León, culminating in the victory at the Battle of São Mamede in 1128. This feat marked the beginning of the process that would consolidate Portugal as an independent kingdom, recognized in 1143 by the Treaty of Zamora and legitimized by Pope Alexander III in 1179. During his reign, Afonso Henriques expanded his territories southward, reconquering lands under Moorish rule, notably the capture of Santarém and Lisbon. His military and political leadership laid the foundation for the country's growth, reinforcing Christianity and national identity. The Knights Templar played a significant role in the Reconquista and the formation of Portugal. Aligned with the Christian cause, they received vast lands and resources as a reward for their military and strategic assistance against the Muslims. In Portugal, the Templars were directly protected by Afonso Henriques and his successors, performing not only military but also administrative and economic functions. After the Order's extinction in the 14th century, much of its assets were transferred to the Order of Christ, which continued to support the kingdom's development and future maritime exploration.
