Former President Almazbek Atambayev was released from Penal Colony No. 27 on February 14. He was greeted by his supporters, including former MPs Asel Koduranova, Ryskeldi Mombekov, and Meerbek Miskenbayev, former Chief of the Presidential Executive Office Farid Niyazov, former head of the 9th Service of the State Security Committee (State Security Service) Damir Musakeyev, and others. On June 23, 2020, the Pervomaisky District Court sentenced Atambayev to 11 years and 2 months in prison for the illegal release of so-called "thief in law" Aziz Batukaev. On August 14, 2020, the Bishkek City Court upheld the sentence. Later, on November 30, 2020, the Supreme Court overturned all previous court rulings and remanded the case for a new trial. However, some time later, in October 2021, the Supreme Court reinstated the verdict in this case. On February 13, 2023, the Supreme Court overturned its previous ruling and remanded the case to the trial court due to newly discovered circumstances.
