George Villiers 1st Duke of Buckingham, His Life, Loves and Legacy. The Duke of Buckingham was a very controversial historical English figure. Handsome and ambitious, he rose with astonishing speed through the ranks of the aristocracy yet, he was generally regarded with suspicion and dislike by the rest of the court. Villiers was the last in a succession of handsome young favourites of the monarchy on whom King James I and Charles I lavished affection and patronage. He also had what can only be described as a very sketchy political and military record.
