The Day of the Little Candles is celebrated in Colombia as the vigil for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The dogma was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in the papal bull Ineffabilis Deus on December 8, 1854. In Barranquilla, the celebration begins on the night of December 7, marking the start of the Christmas season. In this city, the December atmosphere is enhanced by the trade winds, which create a distinctive ambiance. In the early morning of December 8, around 3:00 a.m., amidst a lively festive atmosphere, residents place multicolored lanterns illuminated with candles on the fronts of their houses and on the sidewalks to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. Traditionally, these lanterns are handcrafted, made with wooden slats arranged in a truncated pyramid shape, their faces covered in cellophane paper in green, yellow, blue, and red.
