Cape St. Athanas. Life in Bulgaria Documentary – Part Six. Located in the town of Byala (historically known as Akdere) on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, between Varna and Burgas, Cape St. Athanas (Nos Sveti Atanas) is one of the region's most significant archaeological and tourist landmarks, renowned for both its natural beauty and its multi-layered historical heritage. Geographic Location Location: A rocky cape situated at the southeastern tip of the town of Byala in the Varna province. Strategic Importance: Positioned at a point overlooking the Black Sea, it has been a critical location for both maritime navigation and defense since ancient times. It marks the northern boundary of the Obzor Bay. Archaeological and Historical Significance Excavations on the cape have revealed that this site was not merely a military base, but a vibrant center of trade and religion. Late Antique Fortress (6th Century) The most prominent structure on the cape is the Late Antique fortress built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. This fortress was part of a defense line constructed to protect the Black Sea coast from barbarian invasions. Early Christian Basilica At the heart of the archaeological site lies a large episcopal basilica dating back to the 5th or 6th century. The basilica features a three-nave structure and is famous for its intricate mosaics. Through restorations, the columns and several walls of the basilica have been raised, giving visitors an idea of the structure's original grandeur. Ancient Wineries (Vinalia) The most interesting feature that distinguishes St. Atanas from other ancient cities is the presence of ancient wine presses. This discovery proves that the region was a significant center for wine production during that period. The restored wine cellars and ceramic production kilns serve as unique examples for understanding the daily life and economy of that era. Thracian and Roman Periods Findings that date much further back than the fortress indicate that the cape was used by the Thracians as a cult or sacred site. During the Roman period, it developed into a popular stopover for sailors and a bustling trade port. The Legends of Cape St. Athanas Nos Sveti Atanas is enchanting not only for its archaeological ruins but also for the legends and spiritual stories passed down through generations. The legends surrounding this cape are typically shaped by themes of the sea, miracles, and divine protection. 1. The Protector of Sailors and the Lighthouse Legend In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, St. Athanas is regarded as the master of the seas and storms. According to legend, this cape was a very treacherous point for sailors in ancient times. The Legend Says: On stormy nights, an old man dressed in white (St. Athanas) would appear at the very tip of the cape, guiding ships with his staff. When sailors passed this cape safely, they believed it was a blessing from the Saint and would offer gifts of gratitude to the church upon landing. 2. The Sunken Church and the Sound of Bells The theme of the "sunken city," common along the Black Sea coast, also applies to St. Atanas. Geological research confirms that the cape has shrunk over centuries due to erosion. The Legend Says: A much more magnificent monastery or church once stood at the tip of the cape but was swallowed by the depths of the sea following a massive earthquake or giant waves. Local fishermen claim that on very calm holy days (especially on the feast day of St. Athanas), they can hear the sound of imaginary church bells rising from the deep, warning those at sea of impending danger. 3. Holy Water (Ayazma) and Healing Stories The ancient well and water channels found inside the fortress during excavations are linked to a mystical tale. The Legend Says: The water flowing from a spring near the basilica was considered "Ayazma" (holy water). According to legend, a blind sailor regained his sight after washing with this water, or a nobleman suffering from an incurable disease found a cure here. Even today, locals believe the energy of this land possesses healing powers. Summary Nos Sveti Atanas is more than just a fortress made of stone. For the people of Byala, it is a spiritual shield standing against the wild waves of the Black Sea. When you visit this ancient city today, you can still feel the mystical atmosphere created by these legends while wandering among the columns of the restored basilica. Which of these stories did you find most impressive? If you were to visit one day, would you want to listen for that "imaginary sound of bells"?
