Torque refers to the information provided to the teeth to achieve a specific buccolingual angle. Straight wire brackets have this information incorporated into their slots (the thinnest slot on the brackets), which only become apparent with the sequential use of rectangular wires. These wires, used from thinner to thicker, gradually allow the teeth to achieve the desired angles. Anterior teeth typically have a buccolingual angle, so orthodontic treatment should aim to tilt them more buccally (positive torque). Posterior teeth typically have a palatal or lingual angle, so they should tilt them more palatally (negative torque). The proper use of rectangular archwires allows for precise control of angulations during treatment, which is crucial for space closure and final treatment.
