Hey everyone, in this episode of the "Postwar" series, I tell the story of the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. The idea first emerged in the 1950s. Professor Andrzej Sołtan was the brains behind nuclear energy research in our country at the time. He was one of the few Poles who had the opportunity to observe the nuclear test explosion conducted by the Americans on Bikini Atoll in 1946. He assumed that the first power plant in Poland would be built by the mid-1960s. However, this did not happen. The communist authorities of the Polish People's Republic returned to the topic in the 1970s, under Edward Gierek. It was then that the communist government decided to build the power plant in Żarnowiec. However, such an investment seriously threatened the interests of heavy industry, whose representatives in the government agitated for the project's delay or even its complete cancellation.
