Acts 12:1-11 Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. At that time Herod the king laid hands on some of the church members to harm them. He killed James, John's brother, with the sword. Seeing that this pleased the Jews, he immediately arrested Peter also. These were the Days of Unleavened Bread. Having arrested him, he put him in prison and commanded four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison, while the church earnestly prayed to God for him. As Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping that night between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and the guards at the door were keeping watch. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the prison. The angel struck Peter in the side, awakened him, and said, "Rise quickly." And the chains fell from his hands. And the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and put on your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him, "Put on your cloak and follow me." Peter went out and followed him, not knowing that what the angel was doing was real, but thinking he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and second guards, they came to the iron gate leading into the city, which opened of its own accord for them. They went out and walked down one street, and suddenly the angel was gone from him. Then Peter, coming to his senses, said, "Now I truly see that the Lord has sent His angel and delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were waiting for." 2 Tim 4:6-9, 17-18 Reading from the Second Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to Timothy. Beloved: I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. They said, "Some say that I, the Son of Man, am John the Baptist; others say that I, Elijah; and others say that I, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Simon Peter answered and said unto him, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Then Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter: and upon this rock I will build my church: and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
