Randafison Sylvestre sy Rakotomavo Germain - Rotsirotsy

It is a traditional song and an old military march of Madagascar and it is the first track of the LP "Folklore of Madagascar", 1969, Vogue Records. It was covered by Randafison Sylvestre and Rakotomavo Germain on the collaborative CD album "Resting Place Of The Mists, New Valiha and Marovany Music From Madagascar", 1996, Shanachie Entertainment Corp. This version was popularized by its distribution by Air Madagascar on its routes and by its use in advertisements. This traditional instrumental music is the combination of two popular tunes from the highlands of Madagascar: "Rotsirotsy Izany Tiana" and the quadrille "Manjakandriana"."Rotsirotsy Izany Tiana" used to be a lullaby, but it was taken up by traditional music players and recomposed to become a dance tune. This interpretation by Randafison Sylvestre and Rakotomavo Germain is distinguished by the dialogue between the valiha and the guitar, a guitar that has been tuned and played in the manner of Randafison Remy. The actual title of the song is "Rotsirotsy", but the title "Manjakamiadana" was chosen to name it on the album to commemorate the fire at the Royal Palace on November 6, 1995, while the recording date of the track was November 11, 1996.This commemorative effort was important in that in the 60s and 70s, the Manjakamiadana Royal Palace was the rehearsal place for the Ny Antsaly, as photographed by musician Jef Gilson, on the cover of the album "Folklore of Madagascar", from 1969, showing the Ny Antsaly rehearsing at the Palazzo Tranovola. The CD that contains this track, at the time, was not on sale in Madagascar but only in the United States. On July 12, 2023, it has been twenty years since Randafison Sylvestre left us and I am releasing this track in commemoration of this date. It is both a gratitude and a tribute to the man who has carried the best traditional songs of my country high.
