In 1976, conservation scientist Don Merton stood on the Chatham Islands and faced an impossible choice: the black robin population had collapsed to just five birds, and only one—a female with a blue leg band he named Old Blue—could still breed. The island where they lived was literally eroding into the ocean. Merton had to move them. But what happened next wasn't a simple rescue story. Over 50 years, using a radical foster-parenting technique that no one thought would work, Old Blue produced more than 30 offspring that became founders of a new population. Today, over 250 black robins live across the Chatham Islands. Every single one is her descendant. Not one branch. Not two. One maternal lineage carrying her genetics across five decades. But here's what nobody talks about: when you save a species from extinction by funneling it through a single individual, you don't just save the bird. You lock it into permanent genetic bottleneck. Every chick Old Blue's line produced carries the same limited genetic variation she carried.
