Recife is a city located on the Atlantic Ocean coast of northeastern Brazil. It is the capital of the state of Pernambuco and belongs to the Recife Metropolitan Mesoregion. According to the 2010 population estimate, it has 1,546,516 inhabitants. The Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR), with nearly 4 million inhabitants, is the most populated in the Northeast Region of Brazil, the fifth largest in all of Brazil, and the fourth most densely populated, behind only São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and the capital Brasília. Today, Recife has become one of Brazil's main commercial, tourist, cultural, educational, logistical, medical, and technological regions, hosting the headquarters of large public and private companies such as SUDENE, CHESF, the northeast headquarters of Infraero, and TV Globo Nordeste, part of Organizações Globo, among others.
