Honey-sweet Oranges with bit of tanginess made my Chocolate cake more flavourful! | Traditional Me
It’s a sweet miracle that the oranges in the orange tree of the far corner garden in the other side of the field have started to ripen. Since the orange tree is out of reach of the villagers, no one picks the oranges and are safe and sound growing freely in the tree! The other advantage is that the oranges are safe from monkeys, squirrels because of the bit of tangy taste and the fragrance. But Since my brother, of course picks the ripe oranges time to time, what ever the left ones have started to ripe these days. After our breakfast, I went with brother to pick some oranges. I can’t express my feelings by my own words of a very rare experience when walking in the wee hours of the sunrise in between the paddy field where the golden brown mature rice kernels are eagerly awaiting to be harvested in this fresh rice harvesting season! This rare, mindfulness and joyous peaceful inner feeling is very difficult to explain but one really have to experience it ,personally ! this joyous early morning experience becomes more meaningful and soulful to see the bright orange color oranges showing off their colors so proudly covering the tree. These orange’s skin becomes sun orange when ripen and this variety of orange trees are rare in Sri Lanka. Even though this particular orange tree is not so tall, it’s more than 15 years old. It’s very common for our people to remember a very special city called “Bibile“ in Sri Lanka which is very famous for its sweet oranges! But this orange variety is a bit sour compared to the sweet orange variety grown in “Bibile”. It was indeed a very good idea of taking brother to pick the oranges. Even though the orange tree is not that tall, there were only few oranges that I could reached in the lower branches. Even most of them were hanging amidst the thorny branches. I was never be able to pick them if it wasn’t for my brother. Later I felt that I shouldn’t have taken him with me as for the way he was ridiculing and making fun at me with grandmother for not being able to pick all the oranges. Inspite Of all his jokes he asked for the carrots that I kept to cook for dinner. Huh!...now I knew who is the culprit for randomly, missing carrots in our home. Though he liked to drink carrot juice by blending one or two carrots often, I felt that today he wanted to blend oranges and carrots together for one of his new juice innovation. I am not sure who told brother to drink carrot juice and orange juice together to enhance his looks but that was the reason for him to drink carrot juice! Anyway he took 4 carrots out of the 5 that was in the kitchen to make juice. Inspite of that, he lure grandmother also to his side. But what ever said and done my brother’s carrot juice was delicious! When you bite into the orange segments that he had mixed with the carrot juice, that heavenly fresh taste gives such an unusually new sweet and tangy experience to the palette! Actually it was like a bubble drink! Then I made a "Upma” (semolina rice) with a mixture of orange and lemon flavors complimenting each other. Grandmother tasted the Upma with a delightful smile as it was made with plenty of cashew nuts and few other varieties of nuts and legumes. Also I made a chocolate fudge cake for the next day tea as well! I got a very innovative idea to mix orange flavor to the cake but since the orange skin has this tangy bitterness, I boiled the oranges and sliced them! Then I added sugar to the slices to reduce the moisture. One could eat it as it is as a "doosi" (candied fruit) Oranges and chocolate are a match made in heaven! Both the tastes compliment each other very well. Even the gorgeous colors of brown and orange suits superbly. It’s like beauty and the taste have met each other on one pedestal. Love you All!
