타메(溜め)

"Tameru" is originally a verb meaning "to gather" or "to accumulate," and "Tame" is its noun form. It refers to the intentional act of "gathering" power or movement. It describes a state where one does not execute a technique or movement immediately, but instead holds back or pauses for a certain period to gather momentum, power, and energy. It feels akin to "taking a beat" or "gathering one's breath." It is a movement where one deliberately pauses to look for an opportunity when trying to gauge an opponent's actions. Kendo with Tame is a form of technique that utilizes timing and momentum rather than simply striking quickly. Since striking too quickly can weaken momentum, it is important to build up sufficient momentum through "Tame."
