Meet Saravanaselvam, a stone sculptor from Kasavankundru, Kovilpatti. Living with his family and carrying forward a craft that has been passed down through generations, he continues to work with stone in a time when many traditional practices are slowly fading away. Despite the hardships that come with such a life, he remains deeply passionate about his work and his art. With that same passion came an unusual thought — what if a nadaswaram could be made out of stone? And he did it. Kalnadaswaram: An Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man is our small attempt to document this remarkable journey and portray the man behind this extraordinary creation. Shot entirely on an iPhone, this film tries to capture not only the making of a stone nadaswaram, but also the dedication, patience, and imagination of an artist who chose to stay rooted in his craft. There are many such stories and artists quietly existing around us. We hope this film becomes the beginning of finding and preserving many more of them.
