“I’m shocked they weren’t disqualified”: AC38 Preliminary Regatta, Day 2 summary
“I rewatched it on the live stream a few times just to see how close they were,” says The Foil’s Lewis Smith, “and I think that foil tip of Emirates Team New Zealand Women and Youth was only a couple of metres away from Paul Goodison on Alinghi. I'm really shocked Alinghi didn’t get disqualified actually.” Close calls were a feature of the second day of racing at the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta in Cagliari, as Lewis joins Andy Rice to review the highlights. To make matters worse for Alinghi after that near-miss at the start of Race 5, the Swiss AC40 then suffered a capsize. “It looked like a bit of an unforced error by Phil Robertson, if I'm not mistaken, lifting up the old board through a jibe and tipping the boat over into a capsize,” says Lewis, who is harbourside for The Foil in Sardinia. “A really unfortunate incident for them that put them out of the race.” As Andy explains, “Lighter winds on day two brought a totally different challenge. Instead of the fear of porpoising and crashing off the foils in the windy stuff of the first day in Cagliari, today’s problem was staying cleanly on the foils through manoeuvres.” Our reporters reflect on how Luna Rossa Women and Youth continued to show the way to established senior crews as they consolidated their position at the top of the leaderboard. Andy and Lewis focus on the tight three-way finish for second place in Race 5, and the final race of the day as the Italian crew picked off Emirates Team New Zealand to sign off from Saturday with a win. “Today was a lot about manoeuvres as well,” says Lewis. “We saw in the last race Luna Rossa W & Y overtook the Kiwis, the defenders of the America's Cup, when they messed up a manoeuvre, and they did very well. It was basically a repeat of the last race yesterday where they overtook and went ahead.” The last day of racing plays out on Sunday with two more fleet races and the final. Luna Rossa W & Y have 55 points, eight ahead of ETNZ, with the senior Luna Rossa crew led by Peter Burling snapping at the heels of his former Kiwi crew. Which two will make it through to the final?
