Walk in the Light - 1 John 1:5-2:2
How important is personal holiness to you? This Sunday our brother Sam will take us to 1 John, where we'll consider John’s imperative to walk in the light. In the beginning of the epistle, John teaches "that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." (1 Jn 1:5, ESV) Christians who claim to have fellowship with God are commanded to walk in the light of holiness––to be holy as God is holy. As fallen creatures, we often stumble into darkness and fail to be holy, but John gives us two great assurances from this passage. The first assurance is that if we confess our sin to God, God is faithful to forgive our sin. And the second is that we have an advocate in Christ, who satisfies the wrath of God towards sin on the cross. Through Jesus' death, all who confess their sin and trust in Christ are assured of their full forgiveness and adoption to the God of light. That assurance empowers the Christian to strive for holiness and walk in the light! Big Idea: You cannot walk in the light if you are hiding darkness. Walk in the light by confessing your sin and pursuing holiness. 1. Are you walking in the light? (verses 1:5-7) 2. Are you confessing your sin? (verses 1:8-10) 3. Are you trusting in Christ? (verses 2:1-2) ============================ Preparation Questions: 1 John 1:5-2:2 1. Name three ways you struggle to walk in the light. How can this passage help you as you battle for personal holiness? 2. How do you typically respond when you sin? In light of this passage, how should you respond? 3. What hope does Jesus offer you in 2:1-2? 4. If you're in Christ, how grateful are you for the assurance of God's forgiveness? How much joy, comfort, and peace does it bring to your life? ============================ Learn more about www.cccsanjose.org #light #confession #holiness #bible #sermon
