Tim Duncan: The Greatest Power Forward Ever: And The $25 Million Betrayal Nobody Talks About

Five NBA championships. Two regular season MVPs. Three Finals MVPs. 15 All-Star selections. Career earnings of approximately $220 million. Universally regarded as the greatest power forward in NBA history. And $25 million stolen by the man he trusted most with his money outside of basketball. Tim Duncan met financial advisor Charles Banks IV as a 21-year-old rookie in 1998. He trusted him for 17 years. In 2013 during the audit of his finances that came with his divorce, Duncan discovered that Banks had been systematically defrauding him since 2005. Bad investments in wineries, hotels and beauty products where Banks had undisclosed financial stakes. Forged signatures on multiple documents. A $6 million debt Banks manipulated Duncan into guaranteeing without full disclosure. Kevin Garnett falsely described as a fellow investor to create credibility. Total losses confirmed at over $20 million. Banks was sentenced to four years in federal prison for wire fraud in June 2017. Duncan settled for $7.5 million in restitution. A fraction of what was stolen. Duncan's response: "Luckily I had a long career and made good money. This is a big chunk but it's not going to change my life in any way." But here is the fuller story that the fraud never gets told alongside. A boy from St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands who was training to be an Olympic swimmer. A hurricane that destroyed his pool in 1989. A mother who died of breast cancer the day before his 14th birthday. And a promise he made to her that he would finish his education. Out of all of that came the most quietly dominant career in the history of professional basketball. 19 seasons. One team. Never demanded a trade. Never chased a super team. Won his last championship at 37 years old against LeBron James. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020 and then disappeared into private life as completely as he had always lived it. In this video we tell the full story. The hurricane that created him. The dynasty he built. The fraud that stole $25 million. And the question of why the greatest power forward who ever played is so rarely the first name in the conversation. 👇 Is Tim Duncan the most underappreciated great in NBA history?
