2022 Iceland in October 4K
2022 Iceland We went back to Iceland again in October of 2022 in search for the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis and enjoy seafood from Tjöruhúsið Restaurant in Ísafjörður. October is in the off season for tourism in Iceland, so many campsites across Iceland were closed and a camper van would have made our lives more difficult. Instead we rented a car and booked accommodations. Our focus was primarily the Westfjords but because of the possibility of a large storm in Iceland, we had to plan our trip around the storm. Getting into Keflavik International Airport, we always hit the Duty Free to pick up any alcohol and other products before entering Iceland. Our usual ritual is to go to Braud & Co. for pastries and Reykjavik Roasters for mokkas. Then our journey begins with a nap along the west coast because we were jet lagged. Then a drive to Fossatún Country Hotel and Rock ’n’ Troll Cafe. Accommodations were fine, and the Chicken Panang Curry was very good here. In this same area, you can interact with Icelandic horses at Sturlureykir Horse Farm; get ice cream and skyr from Erpsstadir Creamery; relax at Krauma Health Spa; or eat/stay at Hraunsnef Country Hotel and Restaurant. Iceland was hit by a major storm that wrecked havoc across much of Iceland. We were lucky and the area we picked to stay the first couple nights was relatively unscathed. Other travelers on the ring road weren’t as fortunate having their path blocked, plans changed, and/or had near death experiences due to the high winds and snow. Severe weather in Iceland isn’t anything to scoff at and should be monitored through safetravel.is so you know the weather and road conditions before traveling. After the storm passed we continued our journey to the Westfjords. We travelled to Heydalur Country Hotel. Along the way we stopped by Grábrókargígar Natural Monument and got some amazing salt and tour of the Saltverk facilities. Heydalur was an amazing hotel with outdoor activities, outdoor hotpots and indoor pool. We were greeted by Loki, Bangsi, and free roaming horses. That evening we scoured the skies for the elusive northern lights/aurora borealis. We got very lucky and saw northern lights dancing in the sky. Part 1 of our mission accomplished! We continued our travels through the numerous fjords to Ísafjörður. But we got side tracked after spotting humpback whales feeding in the Skötufjörður fjord. Once we arrived in Ísafjörður, we went straight to Tjöruhúsið Restaurant. Probably our best meal on our trip, the cod cheeks, seafood soup, and coffee/tea bar were amazing. Once full, we had to bid the Westfjords goodbye. Mission accomplished! We travelled to the Basalt Hotel. One of the best hotels on our trip this time. Good food and drink here. But we needed to get back on the road and get to Friðheimar Tomato Farm. Definitely worth the trip for all you can eat tomato soup, bread and coffee. Unfortunately, our Iceland adventure is coming to a close. We ended our trip with an excellent meal at Rok Restaurant. The next day, we’re off to Copenhagen, Denmark. Thanks for watching!
