Many have heard of CNN's famous "Turner Doomsday Video," which Ted Turner ordered aired in the event of the end of humanity. But in 2013, as a result of a massive leak from the internal servers of the Ostankino TV Center, the video became public knowledge. The recording was made in October 2001. It was a time of profound anxiety: memories of the Ostankino TV Tower fire (2000) were still fresh, the September 11 terrorist attacks had occurred in the United States, and the reorganization of the country's main television channel was in full swing—ORT (Russian Public Television) was preparing to rebrand as Channel One. It was then that General Producer (and later CEO) Konstantin Ernst, known for his conceptual, almost cinematic approach to television, issued a secret order to the main broadcast team. According to anonymous sources, at a closed meeting, Ernst uttered a phrase that became iconic in certain circles: "We started broadcasting when a great empire was collapsing. But if the entire world collapses, we have no right to simply pull the plug and show the viewer white noise. We will leave in such a way that the skies over Russia don't seem empty. We will close this broadcast gracefully." The technical unit of ASK-3 (the broadcast studio complex) was tasked with preparing ultra-high-reliability video footage that would automatically launch from dedicated backup servers if the signal from Moscow was interrupted and air defense systems detected a massive missile strike or other global catastrophe. The file was stored in a closed archive codenamed "PROJECT_FINAL_2001_MASTER." The choice of the Trisagion ("Holy God...") as the final track of humanity was a personal idea of ​​the project's creators. In the Orthodox tradition, this chant is part of the funeral service (funeral service) and is also sung during religious processions. Ernst intended this video to be a collective funeral service for all life on the planet. Until November 2013, only a few people knew about the video's existence—the channel's senior management and the shift supervisors of the main program. Everything changed during the scheduled upgrade of the Ostankino TV Center's server capacity and the transition to full HD digital broadcasting. One of the archive's leading system administrators, who had worked at the channel since the late 2000s, stumbled upon an isolated server running an old UNIX operating system. Access to it was protected by legacy protocols. After downloading the .mxf file, he discovered the very same recording from 2001. The digital copy was initially posted in a closed thread on the "Leprosorium" forum, and a couple of days later, it was uploaded to YouTube in large quantities. Channel One's press service responded immediately: the videos were blocked due to copyright complaints within the first 24 hours, the original was completely removed from the forum, but one user still managed to save a 1:48-minute excerpt from the site, albeit in 3gp format. This is the only confirmation that the recording existed.
