Imagine you have hundreds of articles, books, or social media posts and want to find out which central topics they cover. This is where topic modeling comes in: It helps you identify patterns in qualitative data without having to read every single text in its entirety. A so-called "topic" is not a fixed category, but rather a statistical distribution of words that frequently occur together. It is therefore up to you as a researcher to assign a content-related meaning to these clusters depending on your question and the respective context. The best-known technique in topic modeling is Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). This method automatically identifies topics by grouping terms that frequently occur together. In the next step, these clusters can be used to interpret content-related meanings, depending on the question and text type.
