GEORGE GERSHWIN (Composer) was born in Brooklyn in 1898 and began his musical training at 13. Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition written for solo piano and jazz band written in 1924 which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. In fact, Rachmaninoff was one of the audience members who was wowed at the premiere of the work, which premiered in an afternoon concert on February 12, 1924 held by Paul Whiteman and his band Palais Royal orchestra entitled an experiment in modern music given at New York's Aeolian Hall with George Gershwin at the piano. Rhapsody in Blue's piano part was actually written down after this concert took place, so we have no clue how the work actually sounded that day. The famous clarinet solo glissando opening "wail" is one of the great clarinet solos in the 20th century music history, and was improvised on the spot during a rehearsal, giving a touch of humour to the the very opening of the piece.
