The Landscape Is Trying to Tell You Something

In this video, I explore an idea that quietly shapes many of my photographs, even when I’m not consciously thinking about it: gesture and expression in the landscape. We often talk about composition in terms of rules, balance, or structure, but landscapes also communicate through posture, movement, and attitude. Trees lean, twist, and reach. Rocks fracture or soften with time. Mountains rise with authority or settle gently into the land. Water, of course, is pure movement and energy. In this video, I talk about learning to recognise the “body language” of nature and how seeing the landscape as something expressive—almost character-like—can fundamentally change the way you compose an image. I discuss how gesture influences where you place elements in the frame, how much space you give them, and why some photographs feel alive while others fall flat. I also touch on how photographers like Simon Baxter have mastered portraying trees as characters, and how that way of seeing can be applied to forests, shorelines, mountains, and water alike. This isn’t about rules or gear. It’s about slowing down, paying attention, and learning to interpret what the landscape is doing rather than simply recording what it looks like. If you’ve ever felt that a scene had a mood or personality but struggled to translate that into a photograph, I hope this video gives you a new way of seeing. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments: Which natural forms speak to you the most—trees, rocks, mountains, or water? Thanks for watching. — Adam Quiet Light Photography MY WEBSITE - https://adamgibbs.com MY BOOK, LAND & LIGHT - https://adamgibbs.com/books/landlight ANTARCTICA BOOK - https://quietlightphotoadventures.com...
