2 x Fiat X1/9 Bertone in action on hillclimb: Accelerations & Loud Sound!
Here's a video about two very loud Fiat X1/9s I recorded during the 2020 Bologna-Raticosa historic hillclimb in Italy. The X1/9 is a two-seater mid-engined sports car designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat from 1972-1982. It was the first Fiat to have been designed from the beginning to meet US safety regulations. Thanks to its balanced handling, retractable headlights, lightweight removable hardtop which could be stowed under the bonnet, front and rear storage compartments it achieved a decent success in sales. The X1/9 derives from a 1969 concept car, the Autobianchi A112 Bertone Runabout, a compact barchetta with an eye-catching roll bar. It was built by Bertone and designed by Marcello Gandini, as a sports solution proposal for the A112. The success obtained by the Runabout at the Turin Motor Show of the same year encouraged Nuccio Bertone to built an evolution of the prototype in the style of a Targa sports car, so that it could be more easily industrialized compared to the original barchetta design. In 1971, during a visit to the Bertone factories, Gianni Agnelli noticed the small targa car, finding it suitable as a replacement to the Fiat 850 Spider. At first the X1/9 was equipped with a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder engine derived from the Fiat 128 Coupé 1300. This engine produced around 74 hp at 6,000 rpm and it was linked with a 4-speed gearbox. In 1979 it underwent the first and only restyling of its long career with the ''Five Speed'' version. Of course a 5-speed manual grearbox was introduced, but there was also an increase in engine's displacement, from 1.3 to 1.5-litre, and the max power output increases to 84 hp. Unlike Fiat's marketing nomenclature at the time which used a numerical system (e.g., 127, 128, 124, 131), the X1/9 retained its prototype code as its marketing name. Fiat's prototype coding used X0 for engines, X1 for passenger vehicles and X2 for commercial vehicles. The X1/9 was thus the ninth passenger car developed using the nomenclature. The two cars you see in this video should were born as 'Five Speed' X1/9s but during the years their owners modified them in order to be raced in historic hillclimb events. They should also feature a further increase in engine dispacement up to 1.6-litre. #FiatX19 #Bertone #HistoricHillclimb ------------------------------------------------------------- I have to thank my friends and youtubers @Italiansupercarvideo and @MattyB727 for the great collaboration done during this event.
