UB60: Flat-Wound Strings – D'Addario XL Chromes! & Ernie Ball Flat Wound "G" String – Yes / No?
Expensive D'Addario Flat-Wound XL Chrome Strings & Ernie Ball Flat-Wound "G" String Test... Side-By-Side Comparison - Standard String Set-Up V Flat-Wound Set-Up. Yes / No? As I continue my guitar journey I have generally stayed with two string manufactures and string gauges, and that being - D'Addario and Ernie Ball Slinky. When I initially came back to guitar a few years ago I started out using 9 gauge strings but would eventually move over to 10 gauge as I have a slightly heavier touch and I find the 10s react better to that. For a while I have often been irked by the "G" string problem that plagues guitarists, resolving either intonation / tuning accuracy issues or that jarring twang going from the "D" string to the "G". Over the past couple of years I have learned to tune the "G" in accordance with whatever I happen to be playing at the time, and along with better finger picking control. However, I have been intrigued to try replacing the standard "G" with a flat-wound "G" and that's what I did with my Fender 52 Telecaster. In this video you will hear a side-by-side comparison, and while it settled things in my own mind never to use a flat-wound "G" on any of my guitars... you may think differently. As for the test which covers the D'Addario full set of XL Chrome Flat-Wound strings on my Gibson ES 339 - that's a different story but the jury is still out on whether I will keep those strings on it.
