In the Quarter Finals of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) Cruiserweight Tournament, undefeated 30 year old Oleksandr Usyk (Олекса́ндр Олекса́ндрович У́сик) aka “The Cat” takes on 32 year old Marco "Kapt'n" Huck (Muamer Hukić) in the 3rd defense of his WBO Cruiserweight Championship in Berlin, Germany. Prefight records; Usyk 12(10)-0, Huck 40(27)-4-1. In September 2016, Usyk defeated Krzysztof Glowacki via UD12 to bag the WBO Cruiserweight Title in his 10th bout. Between December 2016 & April 2017, Usyk made 2 successful defenses of the title and for his 3rd defense he was up against the 13 year veteran from Germany for the inaugural match of the WBSS. Entering the fight, Huck had notable wins over Victor Emilio Ramirez, Dmytro Kucher, Denis Lebedev, Firat Arslan (2x) & Ola Afolabi (3x) while Usyk had defeated top oppositions such as Thabiso Mchunu, Krzysztof Glowacki & Michael Hunter. Overall, Huck put up a game albeit losing effort against the champion who’s wizardly skills were in full display; evasive lateral movements, a pinpoint right jab with consistent body attacks to nullify and eventually break down the tough challenger en route to retaining his title and improved his unbeaten record to 13(11)-0. In round 1, referee Robert Byrd called timeout to caution Huck’s cornerman to stay off the ring apron. In round 4, Huck was wobbled with a blinding left hand followed by a salvo of shots upstairs. In round 5, Huck was badly hurt and held on desperately with about 25 seconds left to the bell. In round 8, Huck was deducted a point for hitting Usyk while he was down from a slip. In round 10, a barrage of nonstop assault by Usyk prompted Byrd to wave off the bout. After beating Huck, Usyk advanced to the semifinals where he overcame Mairis Briedis via a hard fought MD12 on January 27th 2018. On July 21st 2018, he toppled Murat Gassiev in the finals via a lopsided UD12 to become the Undisputed Cruiserweight World Champion where he held all 5 of the major world titles and became the 1st fighter in history to be awarded the prestigious Muhammad Ali Trophy. It was the 1st time in 3 decades since an Undisputed Cruiserweight World Champion was crowned; back in April 9th 1988, then unbeaten 26 year old Evander Holyfield who held the IBF & WBA Cruiserweight Titles earned the distinction by defeating Carlos De León via TKO8 to garner the WBC Cruiserweight Crown.
