Investigators found that her foot was pressed completely on the accelerator and the brakes were never applied. In August 2023, she was found guilty of murder, felonious assault, and aggravated vehicular homicide in a bench trial. Shirilla, who was 17 at the time of the incident, is incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio, and will not be eligible for parole until 2037. In the meantime, however, Mackenzie's parents have vowed to do everything they can, to "never stop" trying to get her out of prison. Now, while most of us may have understood that this does not guarantee we will be getting out before we are sentenced to, Mackenzie is not most of us. Her parents refusal to acknowledge the truth about their daughter's role in these deaths, has allowed for Mackenzie to take no accountability whatsoever, AND believe her parents will find a way to get her out. Rather than use her time in prison to improve herself or her circumstances (ensuring one way or another, she eventually gets out of prison) Mackenzie, while waiting for her parents to break her free, or for the public to take up arms in her honor, she seeks only to kill time engaging in the same exact behaviors she did every day prior to the car crash that landed her in prison to begin with.
