The Lagoon 450 is one of the most successful production multihulls ever built. Over 1,011 hulls have left the yard since 2011, and on any charter dock from the BVI to Croatia you can spot multiple of them in a single field of view. The model basically defined what a modern cruising catamaran looks like: huge saloon, flybridge, owner suite that fills an entire hull, easy to charter, easy to sell at boat shows. From a commercial standpoint it has been a runaway hit. The structural reality behind the joinery is a different story. In this video we walk through: ๐Ÿ”ง The engineering behind a catamaran main bulkhead, why it carries the entire racking load of the boat (around 80 tonnes of rigging force on a 45 footer), and what happens when the bond between the bulkhead and the hull skin is glue rather than properly tabbed fiberglass. ๐Ÿ”ง The exact failure modes documented across the Lagoon 450 fleet: bulkheads bending, cracking, buckling under mast compression, separating cleanly from the hull, cabin doors that no longer close, gaps appearing in the interior furniture, white delamination marks on the laminate. ๐Ÿ”ง The 400 S2 anchor locker rot issue and why water ingress at the bow has produced systemic forward bulkhead damage across multiple hulls in different climates, owned by different people, used differently. ๐Ÿ”ง The "abnormal use" defense the manufacturer initially offered, including the list of activities that owners and surveyors pointed out are basically the definition of cruising (powering into a head sea, occasional groundings, rig tension outside spec). ๐Ÿ”ง The VPLP Design review, the official "no safety issue" finding, the three step inspection program, the metal plate "mechanical splint" repair, and why a one year warranty on a structural fix made a lot of owners furious. ๐Ÿ”ง The Lovett v. Beneteau Group America class action filed in Delaware Superior Court (docket N24C-09-266), the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act allegations around anti-tying and disclosure, and what the May 2025 ruling means for the case going forward. ๐Ÿ”ง The Parlay Revival YouTube documentation and how Colin MacRae's footage made it impossible for the official position to hold. ๐Ÿ”ง The proper structural repair methodology used in the field: epoxy resin, triaxial and biaxial fiberglass, real tabbing instead of glue, and what it actually costs (between $10K and $100K depending on the extent of the work). ๐Ÿ”ง How the surveying and insurance industries have rewritten their rules around these boats, why invasive surveys are now standard, and what underwriters like Pantaenius will and will not cover. #Catamaran #SailingLife #BoatBuying Copyright Disclaimer This video may include copyrighted material used under the "fair use" principle for educational and informational purposes.
