As I walk through Getsemaní, I explain how this neighborhood was once the marginal district of Cartagena de Indias, where freed slaves, mulattos, fishermen, and poor workers lived. From these streets emerged Pedro Romero, one of the key figures in the independence of Cartagena and Colombia, a charismatic leader who turned this rebel neighborhood into the heart of the revolution against the Spanish Empire. Today, Getsemaní is one of the most visited areas for tourism in Cartagena, Colombia, filled with boutique hotels, bars, music, and street art. However, this transformation has also brought strong gentrification in Colombia, forcing many original residents to leave. In this walk, I talk about urban art, real history, tourism, local economy, and the social cost behind this global hotspot. This walk also takes place on a historic day for Colombia and Latin America: the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
