"Soldier Boy" by John Milne - The 18th Street Singers

"Soldier Boy" by John Milne Text adapted from Siegfried Sassoon's (1886-1967) "Suicide in the Trenches" Lyrics: I knew a simple soldier boy Who grinned at life in empty joy, Slept soundly through the lonesome dark, And whistled early with the lark. In winter trenches, cold and deep With shells and lice and lack of sleep, He put a bullet through his brain and no one spoke of him again. You smug-faced crowds with shining eye Who cheer when soldier boys march by, Sneak home and pray you’ll never know The hell where youth and laughter go. ------------------------ 18th Street Singers Spring Concert, "Synthesis" June 13 & 14, 2025 www.18thstreetsingers.com
