The Class 217 was an interim solution to the Class 218. Therefore, only 15 locomotives were built between 1965 and 1968. Today, Class 217 locomotives can only be admired in museums or on private railways. None are operational anymore. For a time, many were based in Mühldorf am Inn and used for freight service.
