Diego Golombek live from Buenos Aires on "Sneaking Science into Fiction" June 6, 2026

This lively speaker tells us how he smuggles his science into mainstream fiction. There s a genre call science-in-fiction that is quite distinct from science fiction. Learn about the work of Carl Djerassi, who discovered and developed "the pill" and his lifelong pursuit of a bridge between C. P. Snow's "two cultures" or the worlds of what we now call STEM and the arts and humanities. Our friendly and accessible professor, Diego Golombek, also explores the broad issue of how communication relates to scientific research. Prof. Golombek is in the field of Neuroscience and Circadian Rhythm research. He has read a broad range of texts and recommends books on both sides of the science-humanities divide. Our usual view of Charles Darwin is of an old man writing in his study but Prof. Golombek tells about the startling new side of Darwin illuminated in his opera _Darwin in Patagonia_, wherein the 21-year-olf Charles Darwin interacted with indigenous peoples far in the south of Argentina, had many lesser-known experiences, and made discoveries. Back to science fiction, Diego tells us where new and promising leads may be found for science fiction and how to keep ourselves energized and ready to be both thoughtful and creative.
