Macron, le jeune président #cdanslair 08-05-2017
A highly symbolic image. Barely elected President of the Republic, and with the electoral battle already underway for the legislative elections, Emmanuel Macron attended the Armistice Day commemorations alongside François Hollande. Together, they laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, before pausing in silence to the strains of La Marseillaise and the Chant des Partisans (Song of the Partisans), and paying tribute to veterans. This was the first time the newly elected president had participated in an official commemoration the day after his election. A moment rich in meaning and symbolism, as there have only been two precedents under the Fifth Republic. On May 8, 2012, Nicolas Sarkozy invited François Hollande, elected two days earlier, to attend the ceremony. François Mitterrand had also invited Jacques Chirac on May 8, 1995, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Allied victory over the Nazi regime. Following a ceremony that resembled a symbolic handover, the outgoing president walked to the Champs-Élysées to shake hands with those who had come to attend the commemoration, after escorting the president-elect to his car. In 2012, "Nicolas Sarkozy invited me" to the ceremonies. "It's a tribute we owe to all those who liberated us, and I wanted Emmanuel Macron to be there beside me, so that a kind of torch could be passed," explained the head of state. "Emmanuel Macron has supported me throughout these past years... he has come into his own, he is the president. It is up to him, drawing on the experience he has gained from me, to continue," declared François Hollande, as his successor returned to his headquarters to tackle the numerous issues awaiting him. François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron will meet this Wednesday to commemorate the abolition of the slave trade and slavery in France, before the official transfer of power on May 14th on the steps of the Élysée Palace. The eighth president of the Fifth Republic will then announce the name of his Prime Minister, who will notably be tasked with leading the delicate battle of the legislative elections in a deeply divided France. While he garnered 66.10% of the votes cast, the man who now seeks to unite "progressive republicans" acknowledged on Sunday that he had not received "a blank check" from voters after an election marked by record abstention exceeding 25%, nearly 12% blank ballots, and a historic score for the far right of 33.9%. So who could be the Prime Minister of the eighth president of the Fifth Republic? Unknown to the general public just three years ago, and only 39 years old, Emmanuel Macron is about to enter the Élysée Palace. What kind of president will he be?
