The Horrifying Reality Of A Peasant Home In 1200s England — Filth, Parasites, And Death

This dark history documentary reconstructs a complete day inside a thirteenth-century English peasant home, revealing the brutal realities of domestic life during the medieval period. Drawing on archaeological evidence, surviving household manuals, coroner's records, and modern scientific analysis of medieval burial sites, the film examines every aspect of daily existence from the straw-covered floors that Erasmus described as harboring decades of accumulated filth to the cesspits that killed the workers who cleaned them. Roughly eighty percent of England's population in the 1200s lived in one-room wattle-and-daub houses shared with livestock, heated by a central hearth fire with no chimney, and infested with fleas, lice, and bedbugs that no medieval remedy could eliminate. Mattress straw was changed once a year. Intestinal parasites infected up to a third of the population. Water sources sat dangerously close to cesspits, spreading dysentery and other waterborne diseases through communities that had no understanding of germ theory. The bread peasants ate had to be baked in the lord's oven at a mandatory fee, and during the Great Famine of 1315 families were forced to eat their own seed grain, extending the catastrophe across multiple harvests. Medieval people were not indifferent to hygiene. Soap existed, bathhouses operated in cities, and lice removal was a daily social ritual. But the closed loop of contamination in which they lived, from cesspit to well to garden to table to body and back again, could not be broken without scientific knowledge that remained centuries away. Infant mortality reached thirty percent. Life expectancy at birth hovered around thirty to thirty-five years. And the Black Death, which would kill between thirty and fifty percent of England's population, was already approaching from the east.
