In June 2026, at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, a Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) F-2 fighter jet participated in Valiant Shield 2026, a multinational joint exercise hosted by the United States. The F-2 fighter jet conducted a live-fire ship sinking exercise (SINKEX) during this exercise. The image shows an F-2 fighter jet firing an air-to-ship missile. The target ship was the retired U.S. Navy amphibious transport dock USS Juneau. The F-2 was developed based on the American F-16, with improvements and enlargements to various components. It is a multi-role fighter capable of anti-ship, anti-air, and ground combat. Especially in Japan, with its vast territorial waters, anti-ship combat—attacking enemy ships at sea—is a major mission for the F-2. The aircraft's paint scheme is maritime camouflage, making it difficult to identify at sea. The F-2 made its maiden flight in 1995 and began deployment in 2000. Four prototypes and 94 production aircraft were produced. Currently, F-2s are deployed at Hyakuri Air Base, Matsushima Air Base, Hamamatsu Air Base, Gifu Air Base, and Tsuiki Air Base. The F-2s at Hyakuri Air Base play a central role in the air defense of the Tokyo metropolitan area. At Matsushima Air Base, F-2s are used for fighter pilot training. The Air Development and Test Wing at Gifu Air Base houses four F-2 prototypes for testing and evaluation of the airframe and missiles. At Hamamatsu Air Base, F-2 maintenance personnel are trained using actual aircraft. The F-2s at Tsuiki Air Base are responsible for air defense (scramble) operations against airspace violations in the Chugoku region and northern Kyushu. The F-2 is expected to begin retirement around 2035. In December 2022, it was announced that a successor aircraft would be jointly developed by Japan, the UK, and Italy.
