But after the victory over England, a new struggle began—this time within France itself. The Valois kings consolidated their power, broke the old aristocracy, sold off offices, raised taxes, and dragged the country into costly wars. Against this backdrop, Protestantism became not just a new faith, but a political weapon. Huguenots and Catholics began to see each other not as rivals, but as enemies to be destroyed. The culmination of this hatred was the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. The wedding of Margaret of Valois and Henry of Navarre was supposed to reconcile France, but instead, Paris turned into a city of carnage.
