Record-high inflation and shortages of essential food and fuel have led to anti-government protests. The government has now declared a state of emergency. One of the major causes of the economic crisis is its debt to China. Sri Lanka has long borrowed huge amounts of money from China to promote large-scale infrastructure development. This has put pressure on its finances. As a result, the country has fallen into a "debt trap" where it is unable to repay its debt and China's control is strengthening. The economic crisis is also exacerbated by the slump in tourism, one of Sri Lanka's main industries and a valuable source of foreign currency, due to the spread of COVID-19. The Russian invasion of Ukraine further exacerbated the Sri Lankan economy's deterioration. The currency depreciated further, dwindling foreign exchange reserves. Fuel and food imports were disrupted, causing prices to soar. All cabinet members, except for the president and prime minister, and the central bank governor resigned in response to the economic crisis. In response to rising fuel and food prices, the government has introduced measures such as roughly doubling the policy interest rate, but no path out of the economic crisis is in sight.
