There's Something People Tell AI That They Won't Tell Anyone Else

What if the things we're building (social media, AI, humanoid robots) are all the same attempt to solve something we've been trying to solve for a long time? In this episode of Deeper Theology, we look at why thirty years of social media didn't satisfy a need we thought it would. We look at what's actually happening when people start telling AI things they wouldn't tell their spouse. We look at the 2012 film Robot & Frank and what it suggests about how we form attachments. And we look at why the longing keeps surviving every new thing we build to satisfy it, from Genesis 2:18 to the U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on loneliness. This isn't an episode about whether AI is good or bad. It's not about whether you should use ChatGPT or buy a humanoid robot. It's about something quieter, what we're actually reaching for when we reach, and whether the substitutes can hold what we keep handing them. If something we talked about is still sitting with you, drop it in the comments. We're sitting in questions that don't have easy answers, and sometimes the clearest thinking comes from the people watching. Your comment might shape a future episode. ____________________________________________ CHAPTERS 00:00 — Cold open: the need that keeps not getting satisfied 01:15 — The connection we were promised 03:46 — Seen but not known 04:29 — What people tell AI that they won't tell anyone else 06:51 — Robot & Frank: how attachment actually works 10:21 — Pets, presence, and the depth they can't follow into 11:46 — Genesis 2:18 and Solomon's answer 16:09 — The longing that survives everything we build 17:26 — Closing question ____________________________________________ 📜 SCRIPTURE REFERENCES Genesis 2:18: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/...
