Mulanthara Swayambhu Shiva Temple, located in Kunissery, Palakkad district, Kerala, is a rare sight, nestled on the serene bank of the Gayatri River. Unlike other temples in Kerala, where banyan trees grow nearby, here the tree has grown right on top of the temple. The entire stone structure is wrapped in thick roots, hiding the walls from view. Only a small part of the entrance is visible, and through the locked door, you can spot the Shiva idol nestled among the roots. This banyan tree feels like the temple's protector, turning it into a living "nature temple." മുളന്തറ സ്വയംഭൂ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം. ആൽത്തറയിൽ വളർന്ന് വലുതായി നിൽക്കുന്ന വർഷങ്ങൾ പഴക്കം ഉള്ള ആൽമരങ്ങൾ നാട്ടിൽ ഒരുപാടു കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടേലും, ആദ്യമായാണ് ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുകളിൽ ആൽമരം വളർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നതായി കാണുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുകളിലൂടെ ആൽമരത്തിന്റെ വേരുകൾ പടർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നത് കാരണം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചുമർ പോലും നേരെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ല. കാട് മൂടിയ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം. കരിങ്കല്ലിൽ പണി തീർത്ത ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുഴുവനായും ആൽമരത്തിന്റെ വേരാൾ മൂടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മുകളിൽ ആയാണ് പടുകൂറ്റൻ ആൽമരം നില്കുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്ര കവാടത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗം മാത്രമാണ് വേര് മൂടാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നത്. പൂട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്ന വാതിലിലൂടെ നോക്കിയാൽ ഒരു കല്ല് കാണാൻ കഴിയും അതാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ്. ഇവിടെ നിന്നാൽ ഈ ആൽമരം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷകനായി ആണ് തോന്നുന്നത്. ആൽമരത്തിന്റെ വേരുകൾക്കിടയിലായുള്ള ശിവ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ്. ശരിക്കും ഇതാണ് പ്രകൃതി ക്ഷേത്രം.
