Trying different layouts in the end I settled on placement of PiP in the upper left corner of the frame. I did not use mirroring for rear camera view, because cyclists are more likely to look over their shoulders rather than in the rearview mirror. So a viewer can look up and left at any moment to check what was behind. In that sense PiP is better than switching views fixed in the final cut.
