A radical change in attitude marked Nicolás Maduro's third appearance before the Southern District Court of New York. Maduro's transformation in court contrasts dramatically with his first hearing, when he declared himself the "legitimate president of Venezuela" and claimed to be "kidnapped." Judge Alvin Hellerstein, a magistrate with a distinguished judicial career, established from the outset that "there are no presidents here, no first ladies here, there are two defendants sitting in the dock." During the initial hearing, which lasted 35 minutes, Maduro displayed "a lack of decorum and respect in court," according to witnesses present. The second hearing, lasting 25 minutes, focused on procedural matters and technical adjustments to the case. The judge categorically refused to use titles of nobility when referring to Cilia Flores, telling the defense attorney, "Titles are not used in this court." At the third hearing, held recently, the trial date was set for June 1, 2027. Eyewitnesses noted that Maduro appeared "much thinner" and spoke only "with his lawyers and practically in their ears."
