The old phalanx — one long wall, solid and predictable — had walked obediently into a valley and been trapped. Rome built something new: the manipular legion, flexible, able to fight on broken ground, able to respond while moving. It took years. It took a general named Fabius Maximus who refused to hurry. By 295 BC, the army was ready. Which was fortunate, because the largest coalition in Italian history was assembling to destroy them. Gauls. Samnites. Umbrians. Etruscans. Four peoples who rarely agreed on anything had agreed on this: if Rome was not stopped now, it would never be stopped. Sentinum is where the arithmetic resolved itself. Two Roman consuls, two wings. One of them is named Decius Mus. His father had the same name. His father had done the same thing, fifteen years earlier, at Veseris. The chariots break the left. The left is Decius's wing. He knows what this means. Story summary: After Caudine Forks, Rome restructures its army into the manipular system — smaller, faster units for difficult terrain. Then the great Italian coalition forms: Gauls with war chariots, Samnites, Umbrians, Etruscans, all moving at once. At Sentinum in 295 BC, Fabius holds the right, Decius Mus the Younger commands the left. Gallic war chariots break the left wing. Decius performs the devotio exactly as his father did — rides into the Gauls alone, dies, the line stabilizes. Fabius at exactly the right moment commits his reserves, drives through the Samnite center. The coalition shatters. This is the battle that decides Italy. Pontius — the Caudine Forks general — is captured and executed.
