Frust in der Klinik: Zwischen Kostendruck und Patientenversorgung | ZoomIN
Everyday hospital life in 2021: High workload and financial pressure on medical staff. Our ZoomIN reporter Lena Nagel wanted to see for herself the situation in German hospitals and accompanied resident Dr. Max Benckendorff for a shift. Max works in the intensive care unit and talks about his passion for the medical profession, about pressure, and about a billing system that prioritizes profits. German hospitals are financed through the case-based payment system. To understand this and the impact on hospital staff, Lena also speaks with Frieder Hummes from the Bunte Kittel initiative, physician and medical ethicist Prof. Karl-Heinz Wehkamp, and medical sociologist Nadja Rakowitz from the Association of Democratic Doctors for this episode of ZoomIN. In the end, one thing is clear: if anything is to change in our current healthcare system, politics must ensure it. The future traffic light coalition government has already announced some changes in its coalition agreement: There will be "needs-based, adequate funding for pediatrics, emergency care, and obstetrics." However, the coalition partners fundamentally want to stick with the DRG system. Medical ethicist Wehkamp criticizes: "What is missing is a commitment to ensuring the independence of medical patient-related decisions within the framework of a financing model that recognizes and transparently communicates the fundamental scarcity of resources." If you want to know more, here is an overview of the coalition agreement: https://kurz.zdf.de/Ywr/ Note: The film crew is vaccinated and has undergone fresh tests for filming at the hospital. _____ Here on ZDFheute News, you can find out what's happening in the world and what concerns us all: We provide insight into the world of news, explain the background, and address social debates.
