Tafseer Surah Ale Imran - 3:86 to 3:88
In this lecture Mufti Nizamuddin Qasmi of Mysore explores Surah Ale‑Imran, verses 86–88, which are the concluding verses of the third Juz. The main points discussed are: Definition of Apostasy Apostasy (ارتداد) means accepting Islam and then abandoning it to return to disbelief or shirk. A disbeliever is one who never accepted Islam. An apostate is one who accepted Islam but later rejected it. No Compulsion in Religion Islam forbids forced conversions. The Qur’an clearly states: “There is no compulsion in religion.” Faith is a matter of the heart and cannot be changed through coercion, only through character, ethics, and sincere persuasion. Refuting Misconceptions The claim that Islam spread by the sword is false. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had no army or kingdom when he began preaching. His character, Qur’anic miracles, and teachings attracted people to Islam. In 23 years, millions embraced Islam willingly. Examples from Prophetic Era Only three cases of apostasy are recorded during the Prophet’s lifetime. One, Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh, returned to Islam after repentance. Two others (Abdullah ibn Khatal and Muqees ibn Subabah) left Islam due to worldly motives, not because of flaws in the religion. Strength of Faith Despite persecution, torture, and loss of property, early Muslims remained steadfast. Many gave their lives while proclaiming the shahada, proving the depth of their conviction. Historical Testimony Roman Emperor Heraclius once asked Abu Sufyan if Muslims ever abandoned their faith after accepting it. Abu Sufyan, then an enemy of Islam, admitted: “No, once they accept, they remain firm.” Islamic Governance In Islamic rule, non‑Muslims were never forced to convert. They could: Remain in their faith while paying jizya (tax). Practice freely in their churches and temples. Receive protection and rights equal to Muslim citizens. Qur’anic Warning Those who abandon Islam after recognizing the truth are cursed by Allah, angels, and believers. They face eternal punishment unless they sincerely repent. Possibility of Repentance Allah is Merciful. If an apostate repents sincerely and reforms, Allah forgives and welcomes them back to Islam. ✅ Conclusion The lecture emphasizes that Islam is a religion of conviction, not compulsion. Apostasy is condemned, but repentance is always open. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions spread Islam through character, ethics, and truth—not force. The enduring message: Faith must be sincere, and Muslims must uphold unity, justice, and respect for others.
